Veterinary Acupuncture

  What is Acupuncture?

Veterinary acupuncture has been used to treat animals in China for nearly 3000 years. It is the stimulation of points on the body which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to achieve the desired effect. It is a very effective method of treating a wide range of conditions when used alone or in combination with western veterinary medicine.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, energy called Qi circulates through our body along pathways called meridians and provides each organ system with energy and nourishment. When there is an imbalance of this energy disease results. Acupuncture is believed to restore this balance, thereby assisting the body in healing.

From a Western perspective, stimulating an acupuncture point acts locally to increase blood flow to the area, stimulates nerves and releases hormones bringing in cells that are important for inflammation and healing. Acupuncture also stimulates nerves that send a response to the spinal cord which, in turn, send messages to the brain. This causes chemicals to be released that have many different effects on the body, including endorphins which are important in relieving pain.

What can you expect from Acupuncture Treatment?

Prior to each treatment, a thorough exam will be performed to ensure an accurate diagnosis from both a Chinese and Western perspective. The placement of the needles rarely causes discomfort.. Most dogs actually seem to feel relaxed as a result of the treatment. The length and frequency of treatments depends on the problem and condition of the patient. Severe or chronic problems may require repeated treatments.
